CONTESTS

Costume Contests

Hall Costume Contest: This informal event will be held Friday night, starting about 10 p.m. To participate, simply don your special attire and then "hang out" where people can see you — in the lobby, the consuite, etc. Our three "Mystery Judges" will select one lucky person each and will award their choices with a special ribbon of merit.

Formal Masquerade: The traditional costume competition will be held Saturday after the art auction (which is scheduled to end around 9 p.m.). Here are the procedures of importance: 1) Pick up an entry form at the information desk. 2) Turn in your entry form at the information desk by no later than 45 minutes before the start of the contest, and show up in costume no later than 30 minutes before. 3) An entry may individual or a group. 4) Your appearance may not exceed one minute. 5) If you have narration or an audio tape accompanying your presentation, you must be sure to register as early as possible before the competition, so that the organizers may have an opportunity review and understand your special needs. Masquerade prizes will be awarded solely on the decision of the judges, which are final.

Maze Wars Tournament

This year's networked computer game is Maze Wars — a fast-paced shoot-'em-up challenge played among a twisty series of corridors. Full rules will be discussed before the beginning of each elimination round. 25 participants will play in groups of 5 at a time; sign up for time slots at the information desk. Winners of the initial rounds will go on to play the winners of other rounds in the final megabattle. The first round will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Board Room (lower level); spectators are welcome as long as they do not disturb the players. For further information, stop by the DemiCon Information desk.

!tang Apology Contest

Back by popular demand and more pathetic than ever, this year's !tang apology contest will be judged by the man who inspired it — Joe Haldeman himself (plus wife Gay and friend Rusty). Did you miss it last year? Too bad; that means we'll have to print the rules again…

The idea for this contest was submitted by fans Jim Carroll and Karen Schloss (let's give blame where blame is due). It is based on a concept drawn from Joe's story entitled "A !tangled Web" (originally published in Analog and later re-printed in the anthology Dealing in Futures). The !tang (the ! is pronounced as a sort of glottal click) are an alien race with a rather unusu-
