ART SHOW

We'll bet you can't buy just one!

Help! Please! We have so much art this year… please help to take some of it off our hands. Or, at the very least, stop by the art show room and take a look at all the wonderful stuff sent and brought in to us by possibly the nicest, most talented, and most helpful batch of artists that any small Midwestern con could hope for. Here's the scoop:

Viewing Hours. Located in the Conference room on the first floor, the art show is open on Friday from 2 - 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For security reasons, the art show staff will ask you to check your purses, bags, and any other stuff-carrying containers at the door (and yes, you'll get them back when you leave).

There will also be a special, semi-private art show tour and critique at 9 p.m. Friday, led by four of our artist guests: Lucy Synk, Darlene Coltrain, J. R. Daniels, and Erin McKee. Your guides will discuss the different styles, media, etc., as exemplified by the displayed works; this is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the world of art, especially for those new to such shows. All interested persons should arrive at the Conference room by shortly before 9:00.

Voting. You have an awesome responsibility: to carefully examine all works displayed in this year's show, and then select those few which excel above the rest. It's sure to be a difficult task, but we think you're up to the challenge; be sure to get a voting slip and cast your ballet for this year's "Best of Show" as you peruse our gallery of masterpieces.

Bidding and Buying. There are three ways to purchase art this year: through normal bidding, via quick-sale, or from the print shop.

Bidding: Items in the display area will each have an accompanying bid sheet. If you like what you see, and the sheet is not marked "NFS" ("not-for-sale"), you may enter a bid. Write your name and badge number on the first available bid line; if you are the first bidder, you must enter an amount equal to or above the amount marked as the "minimum bid." If there are other bidders, you must enter an amount that is higher that the last bid. Items with two or more bids, and all award-winning pieces with one or more bids, will go to voice auction at 7 p.m. Saturday. Non-award-winning items with one bid only will go to that bidder. Bid winners may pick up their art after the auction on Saturday or on Sunday.

Quick Sale: If a "quick sale" price has been entered by the artist on a bid sheet, you may purchase the piece immediately for that amount, provided that no other convention member has bid on the piece. If any bids have been entered, you may only purchase the piece by out-bidding the other bidders. Otherwise, you may contact one of the staff at the art show desk regarding immediate purchase. Important: Please note that items purchased by quick sale will NOT be allowed to leave the art show until it closes 6 p.m. Saturday. Other people get very upset when art is removed from display before they get a chance to view it.

Print Shop: The print shop will be run on a cash-and carry basis: you see it, you like it, you buy it, you got it.

Questions? Ask the art show member on duty to help, or ask to speak to Barb Johnson, DemiCon's "head mistress of art."
