Your questions about the Des Moines Howard Johnson's answered

Q: Can I make a lot of noise in my room with relative impunity, or will some other hotel guest jump on my case?

A: It depends. Many of the hotel's rooms will be filled by people who are in town for the Drake relays — especially on Friday night. As of press time, we had arranged for DemiCon members to be concentrated on two floors. The fifth floor is the "noisy" floor; it contains the Consuite and the filk room, and is the floor you should have requested to be on if you're planning on holding a party (private or otherwise). The remaining DemiCon members should be on third floor, which has the "quiet" and "non-smoking" rooms. Try to avoid disturbing people on the first, second, and fourth floors.

Q: Do I have to shake free of my Sunday hangover by noon in order to meet the room check-out deadline?

A: No. We've had check-out extended to 2 p.m. on Sunday, and they can probably be flexible beyond that if you just ask nicely.

Q: Okay, so… how late's the pool open?

A: Officially until midnight. However, because we behaved so well last year, they actually let us keep it open a little later. This, though, is no guarantee of extended hours for this year, so we ask that you please co-operate if one of our security people or the hotel staff nicely ask you to vacate the pool area.

Q: Help! I came all this way to Des Moines, and now I can't get a room anywhere! What should I do?

A: Our hold on the room block only lasted until April 12, and because of the Drake relays, you probably won't be able to find a room nearby, at least on Friday night. However, in anticipation of this, a few — make that "a very few" — rooms were reserved by the convention for just such emergencies. If you would like to take over one of these rooms, stop by the information desk (next to registration in the lobby) and ask the staff member on duty to page Jeannette. Keep in mind that you will still be responsible for paying for the room , and that you may have to share a room with others, at least on Friday night.

Q: Can I put up posters advertising (**your-cause-here**) around the hotel?

A: Yes, as long as you observe the following rules: 1) Attach notices to wood panelled areas with masking tape only. 2) When attaching notices to wallpapered surfaces, use tack or pins, NOT tape. Tacks are available at the registration desk.

Q: Is it actually true that Elvis is alive and well and living in one of the rooms of this hotel?

A: Uh… we don't know. You better ask Dave.
